Step up your holiday décor with festive garland

Give your staircases and railings—indoors and outside—the same holiday treatment as the rest of your house.

Whether you're going up to bed for sweet dreams or coming down to start a new day, decorating your spiral stair and railings for the holidays promises a grand—and festive—entrance.

Garland should be the base of your Christmas decorations for stairs. You can use fresh garland or artificial, wired garland to get the look. Drape or twist the garland up the stair railing and add other elements like ornaments, ribbon, bows or lights to complete the look.

Whether you weave lights through your garland or acquire a pre-lit combination, the lights are not just for show as they also serve a practical purpose and they draw attention to the staircase when it’s dark.

How to: secure one end of the garland to the railing with a zip tie, and wire the garland in place every foot or two as you go. Many stores sell special Velcro for hanging garland. For a different look that won’t interfere with the handrail, simply attach the garland to the balusters at the bottom.

Take a picture of your work and share it on social media (#spiralstair, #wellspirals), and remember how you brightened your 2020.
