Numbers and facts to know when you order spiral stairs

When you’re considering a spiral stairway for your home or project, here are a few questions you will want to think about before you call:

How big? This question gets to both height and width. The finished opening in the floor should be at least three inches larger than the diameter of the spiral to give clearance between the handrail and walls. Spirals 5 feet in diameter and larger conform to BOCA Code, UBC, Code, IRC 2003, IPC 2006, IBC 2006 and IFC 2006 building codes. Standard opening between steps and pickets are made to be less than four inches.

Entry and exit? Think about where you want people to enter the stairway and where they will exit.

Vertical balusters or horizontal bands? The vertical balusters or spindles can be simple or elaborate. Or for a more contemporary look, consider horizontal bands curving around the staircase parallel to the handrail.

Do you want a special newel post? The post at the head or foot of the stairs can be made in a bolder or more distinctive way than the rest of the spindles.

What color? You can order any one color. We use Benjamin Moore oil-based primer and topcoat, we will need to know your sheen preference (matte, gloss or semi-gloss) at time of ordering.

Do you need railing or a gate to coordinate? Measure how many linear feet of railing you will require.

How do I get it into my house? A 5-foot-3 diameter spiral can enter a house thru a 36-inch wide door by corkscrewing the spiral thru the opening. Sliding doors can also be an option. Please send a drawing or picture or your project and we will work with you. In some cases, we recommend a two-piece spiral for tight locations.

Where will it be installed? Knowing whether it’s inside the building or outside may determine design. Also, different municipalities may have different building codes. We have fabricated spirals for a vast number of locations so we might be able to guide you are certain requirements, but you may need to get an inspector involved, too.

Knowing the answers to these questions will help us prepare a more accurate quote for your consideration.
